Dark Matter (2024)
An exhibition presenting the works of a year-long residency undertaken at PhotoAccess, Canberra
Claire Paul draws attention to the natural world's rhythm through a deeply ecological practice that emphasises slowness and mindfulness. Her work fosters a space for grounding and observation, offering an antidote to the hyperactive pace of contemporary life.
In Dark Matter, Paul's photographic portraits of place creates intimate engagements with both human and non-human ecologies through a practice that embraces patience and rejects the extractive tendencies of contemporary life. She experiments with long-exposure pinhole photography, foraging practices, paper-making, alternative photographic development, and screen-printing to make images that are in, with, and of nature. Rather than focusing on technical precision, Paul is drawn to the organic, unexpected results that emerge, reflecting a collaboration with the spaces and materials she inhabits.
Dark Matter was opened on the 25th October at PhotoAccess, Canberra by renowned artist Tracey Moffatt.
